What I Saw

9/11 Memorial and the under construction One World Trade Center

September 11, 2001 started just like any other day. Although my siblings and I were homeschooled we did take music class at the local public school. My mom was the music teacher at the school so we took our moms music class.  Unknown to us at 7:46 central time zone the first plane crashed into the world trade center. As soon as my mom’s music class was over the teacher came and got all the students to come into the TV room to see the breaking news. I did not know it at the time but   he breaking news was the attack. After the class we left the school and went to the post office. When I went in to get the mail the post master said something about a helicopter or some aircraft, she wasn’t sure, crashing into the pentagon.  I got our mail and went pack out to the car to tell my family. Then we were on our way to Lincoln NE.
I don’t remember listening to the radio so the first we heard what was actually going on was when we got to my aunt and uncle’s place in Lincoln. Then the repetitive showing of the planes crashing into the towers started.  And almost for the next week all we saw were the planes crashing and the rescuers in the huge pit.  After we got our shopping finished we went home.
It was amazing how we as Americans came together, politics were out the window. All anybody could think of was the huge tragedy that had taken place.  Within weeks or months we were at war. All Americans were calling for justice against the murderers. Everyone was flying the American flag and was so patriotic. One song that became really popular at the time was “I’m Proud to be an American.  It has really saddened me how fast some people have stopped being patriotic.
The closest the attacks affect got to me besides to horror of the event was the delay in the mail. I remember having ordered something and I did not get it near as fast as it would have arrived before the attack. I also have had to deal with the strong airport security in the years since.
I just hope that on this 10th anniversary of the attacks America can heal, and no more evil will come to us.
God bless America.
And God bless our troops.
